Wildfires in the Amazon, Peru State of Emergency
A significant driver of this deforestation is the demand for products like Cacao, Ayahuasca...
Hello my darling.
It’s taken me a while to put this piece together because it’s just too close to my heart. It’s for the same reason I have not been able to record me reading this, as I usually do.
I am heartbroken and very concerned, having to dig deep “trust the bigger plan.” I nearly didn’t write anything at all. However, I do believe it’s my responsibility to share what’s happening with you – I’m pretty sure this tragic news is getting buried under a lot of nonsense. So here we go.
Most of you know I am back in Peru now and I spend a lot of my life in the Amazon Rainforest. It is my home. The plants, trees, animals, insects and the spirits of the land are my family. As of last week, a state of emergency has been declared in Peru as the wildfires in the Amazon rainforest reach alarming levels, with smoke now visible from space.
This year alone there’s been an 80% increase in the number of fires in The Amazon. This unprecedented surge can be attributed to the ongoing challenges of drought and rampant deforestation.
As someone who has spent 25 years returning to the jungle, living alongside native peoples, plants, trees and animals and witnessing the beauty and interconnectedness of this sacred land, the current devastation is deeply personal and profoundly upsetting.
It is heart-breaking to see the very essence of life that I’ve cherished and honoured being ravaged in such a manner.
Every time I enter the jungle, I am met with less of it. Can you imagine? The forests that have been home to countless beings, wisdom and traditions are disappearing literally before our eyes.
A significant driver of this deforestation is the demand for products like Cacao, Ayahuasca, and kitchen and bathroom goods, such as palm and coconut - to name just a few. Unsustainable harvesting practices have led to the clearing of vast areas, often resulting in stress fires that spiral out of control, leading us to crises such as these.
It’s vital for each of us to be vigilant about the products we consume. Even Cacao, a cherished and ancient gift, is now contributing to this environmental destruction. We must be conscious consumers, ensuring that we support sustainably sourced products.
From a spiritual perspective, these wildfires are a stark reminder of our connection to the Earth and the urgent need for healing—not only for the planet but for ourselves.
The spirit of the Amazon carries the wisdom of generations, calling upon us to rise, advocate and protect. We are all part of this sacred web of life, and when one strand is threatened, the entire tapestry is at risk. I do believe that everything happens for a reason and ultimately for a higher purpose, but moments like these do test my commitment to that faith.
I return to the jungle on Monday and will try to keep you posted as to how it’s going. Sadly, it’s predicted that the wildfires season is likely to peak in October, with the potential for it to extend into January or even February. We hope that rainy season will arrive this year and extinguish these fires. However, erratic weather patterns in the in Peru over the last few years mean we remain uncertain about whether this relief will come.
While the destruction wrought by these fires is dire, my commitment to preserving the rainforest remains unwavering. The Amazon is not only a treasure for Peru but a crucial resource for the entire planet, providing oxygen, biodiversity and climate regulation.
In this pivotal moment, it is essential that we act collectively to safeguard this invaluable ecosystem. I feel like I am in mourning but the bigger picture must remain in focus, along with a positive attitude, and taking action are more vital than ever a this point.
